The unlabeled entry 147e:2016 corresponds to the UPEK
TouchStrip fingerprint reader.
Preliminaries
First I created backup media for the pre-installed operating system. Then I
created my desired partition layout removing the existing installation on
/dev/sda2 as well as the "hidden" pre-desktop area in
/dev/sda1. Since cfdisk from
Knoppix 5.3 complained about the unusual partition layout
and refused to do anything, I used a GPartEd 0.3.4-10 live
CD. The partition manager from the Debian installer might work as well, but I
have not tested that.
Base installation
Debian Lenny was not yet released when I installed the notebook. I used the weekly
build 2008/08/05 of the Lenny installer. There were no problems during the
installation at all. Setting up encrypted file systems (for all partitions except
/boot) on top of LVM was quite easy.
Misc notes
I configured gdm to start the X server with a
resolution of 96dpi since the fonts look better with
this resolution. The SD card reader, suspend and hibernate work without any
problems. The firmware for the wireless card is contained in the
firmware-iwlwifi package (non-free). The fingerprint
reader needs libfprint0,
fprint-demo and
libpam-fprint (currently only in experimental).
Not yet tested
- Bluetooth
- Firewire
- PCMCIA slot
- Modem
